AUGUST 22, 2018 – Brooklyn, NY – While in Telluride, Colorado for the Telluride Jazz Festival, organ virtuoso Cory Henry and his band The Funk Apostles taped a Jam in the Van Session. All three songs (“Takes All Time“, “Trade It All“, and “In the Water“) performed can be found on their new EP Art Of Love, out now. Telluride Jazz Festival was one of a number of stops Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles will make during their North American tour. Today, the band has announced a slew of new fall tour dates all throughout the US. In addition to The Funk Apostles show with Brooklyn funk band Turkuaz at the Capitol Theatre on October 19, Cory Henry will be performing solo sets for his residency at Blue Note in New York City all throughout October. For a full list of upcoming tour dates, please see below.
Recorded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Art Of Love was tracked live to tape in an effort both to capture the inimitable energy of his band The Funk Apostles’ live shows and to channel the warm analog vibes of the 1970s. While Henry may be renowned for his gifts as an improviser, the album serves as a showcase for his skills as a songwriter and producer, rich with intricate arrangements and memorable hooks. That’s not to say it’s without spontaneity, though – the band worked with minimal rehearsal and several tracks are actually first-take recordings.
I want to make music that really means something,” Henry explains. “I think of the 60s and 70s as this golden era of music, and if you look at some of the top artists then like Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder, they were singing about what was happening around them in this creative way that made people want to act. They used music as a tool to reach the world and bring about change to help make it a better place. I want to do that, too.”
The Funk Apostles are Cory Henry (Hammond B3, synthesizer, vocals), Nicholas Semrad (synthesizer), Adam Agati (guitar), TaRon Lockett (drums), Sharay Reed (bass), Denise Stoudmire (vocals), and Tiffany Stevenson (vocals). No strangers to the road, Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles have toured throughout the U.S. and internationally, hitting festivals such as Montreux Jazz Festival, Okeechobee, Electric Forest, North Sea Jazz, Love Supreme Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, and more.
A Brooklyn native, Henry may be best known for his role in jazz-pop orchestra Snarky Puppy, and has won a pair of Grammy Awards for his work with the band since 2012. Henry has also proven himself to be a remarkable singer and songwriter through his work with The Funk Apostles.
