EMBARGOED UNTIL THURSDAY, AUGUST 2 @ 1:00 PM EST (Please, no posting before):
On Saturday, September 29th, 2018, the one-of-a-kind music festival known as Brooklyn Comes Alive is taking over three beloved Williamsburg, Brooklyn neighborhood venues – Rough Trade, Music Hall of Williamsburg and Brooklyn Bowl. Aside from the powerhouse lineup encompassing members of Lettuce, The Disco Biscuits, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, The Meters, Turkuaz, Snarky Puppy and more, this year welcomes the addition of Jam Cruise‘s staple Jam Room, for its first-ever edition on land.
Starting at midnight, Music Hall of Williamsburg will be transformed into the beloved Jam Room for two unique sets, led by honorary hosts hand-picked by the festival. The Jam Room welcomes an open environment of creativity, encouraging artists performing on the bill to hang out, jump on stage and join the fray, often leading to wild, unexpected and memorable collaborations. Historically, it is one of the most exciting parts of Jam Cruise as you never know who will show up in the Jam Room, and Brooklyn Comes Alive is thrilled to host the on-shore debut.
For these very special collaborative sets, Brooklyn Comes Alive welcomes The Meters bassist and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient, George Porter Jr., to lead the first set, who enthusiastically shared, “I am looking forward to bringing the magic of the Jam Cruise Jam Room to this year’s Brooklyn Comes Alive. It’s going to be funky and fun.”
The second set will be led by a special tag-team of Turkuaz guitarist Craig Brodhead and Marco Benevento bassist Karina Rykman. Of The Jam Room, Brodhead said, “If you’ve ever had the privilege of hanging in the Jam Room late into the night on Jam Cruise, you know there’s a lot to be learned from the experience. It gets weird in there. That doesn’t always mean good or bad, but one must always pass through the ‘Door Of Weirdness’ to experience the truly great improvisational moments. I am truly honored to be joining forces at Brooklyn Comes Alive with the incomparable Karina Rykman for a very special Jam Room modeled on this experience, and we’ll do our best to steer the ship and man the stations with the finest musicians Brooklyn will have on hand that evening!”
Rykman shares his sentiment, expressing, “Beyond stoked to co-host the Jam Room at BCA with my dude Craig Brodhead, and represent NYC! This great confluence of players all coming together to create simultaneously is a spectacular thing, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
Concertgoers have to wait and see who shows up to perform the rest of the night but are promised an all-star roster built from the previously-announced Brooklyn Comes Alive lineup.
Tickets are selling fast, but there are still some available here. Please visit BrooklynComesAlive.com for more information.
MORE INFO ON BCA 2018:
In addition to the buttoned-up location proximity with a mere six-block walking radius, the festival is also excited to present its first-ever comedy set alongside their usual musical programming. Wokes With Jokes: Stand-Up Comedy About The Jamband Scene emerged in 2017 during Phish’s New Years run, followed by successful shows based around multi-night runs with Umphrey’s McGee & The Disco Biscuits. The newly formed comedy troupe is comprised of Brett Siddell, Walker Berry, Ariella Wallen, Pamela Mahler and MC Richie Alfson.
Inspired by the vibrant musical communities of Brooklyn and New Orleans, the event brings together more than 50 artists, allowing them to carry out passion projects, play with their musical heroes and collaborate in never-before-seen formations. Each attendee receives a wristband, granting them access to every venue for set hopping ease, recreating and paying homage to the atmosphere of Jazz Fest by night.
Past editions of Brooklyn Comes Alive have seen unforgettable cross-collaborations amongst legends and favorites like George Porter Jr., John Scofield, Johnny Vidacovich, John Medeski, Bernard Purdie, Henry Butler, Oteil Burbridge, Cyril Neville, Eric Krasno, Jon Cleary, Joe Russo, Skerik, and Marco Benevento, plus members of Umphrey’s McGee, moe., The Disco Biscuits, The String Cheese Incident, Trey Anastasio Band, Lotus, Snarky Puppy, Lettuce, Soulive, The Motet, The New Mastersounds, Break Science and more. Tributes to Herbie Hancock, Earth Wind & Fire, The Allman Brothers, Jamiroquai, and Green Day comprise just a few of the many highlights over the last three years. Some groups, like [Br]eaking [Bi]scuits (members of the Disco Biscuits and Break Science), have even gone on to become nationally touring projects after their Brooklyn Comes Alive debut.
