Entering their third decade of playing music and just in their mid-twenties, Slightly Stoopid have created a one-of-a-kind sound by seamlessly fusing acoustic rock, blues, reggae, hip-hop and punk. Along the way, they have created a legion of die-hard fans. Slightly Stoopid’s dual front men Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald were signed to Skunk Records by Sublime’s Bradley Nowell, while they were still in high school in 1995. Since their self-titled debut this band has improved and changed its sound with every album they have released. Their DVD release “Live at Roberto Tri’s Studios” was one I had to see and will time and time again.
When you have Tommy Chong host your DVD and feature guests like Bob Weir, Karl Denson, Ivan and Ian Neville and Don Carlos, can you really go wrong? Slightly Stoopid was invited by the Grateful Dead and Furthur’s Bob Weir into his state of the art TRI Studios, where they had the privilege to bring down some of their close friends, family, and musical guests to “Roberto’s” TRI clubhouse for an unprecedented live webcast and in-studio performance. Tommy Chong hosted the event and provided some “Wisdom.” The musical guests joining us and playing on the session features Karl Denson, Ivan and Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, Don Carlos, and Bob Weir himself! At one point after a song in set two, Kyle says, “Hey Carl! We can smoke in here! Just herb though!” A very fitting thing to say that sets the tone of the DVD.
The result is a 31 song / 2 set acoustic and electric performance including behind the scenes rehearsal footage, and a rare interview segment moderated by Tommy Chong & Bob Weir.
Last but not least, a portion of all proceeds will benefit 2 charitable organizations whom the band supports: Save the Children and World Food Programme.
Despite all the obvious tantalizing names and location, this musical experience is one I’m happy to add to my library.
